April 13, 2015—Members of Bear Creek Church visited Walker Elementary School on April 13 to finalize an Adopt-a-School partnership in front of the school staff.
CFISD’s Adopt-a-School program pairs schools with community and business partners to utilize the resources of the community to strengthen and enrich the quality of education for students.
Bear Creek had previously served Walker without a formal relationship, but chose to make it official to align with its church mission.
“It’s a part of our mission as a church to care for the world around us and love it,” said David Welch, lead pastor. “One of the ways to do that is to meet the needs in the community around us. We think the school system is an excellent place to do that.”
Kim Dameron, first-year Walker principal, said she looks forward to a partnership where the school can utilize volunteers, mentors and other forms of service.
“Without a lot of volunteers and a large PTO, we need that extra support and morale boost that can come from this relationship,” she said. “It was exciting to be able to share something with the staff that was above and beyond anything they’ve had before.”
Walker Elementary School staff members applaud the announcement that Bear Creek Church adopted Walker on April 13.
Dameron and Leslie Francis, director of marketing and business relations, made the announcement a surprise for the Walker staff members when they gathered for a morning meeting.
“It was very hard to keep it a secret. I wanted to tell them right away but held on to the surprise piece of it,” Dameron said. “Looking out and seeing them clap, smile and cheer—that’s exactly the effect I want. We have a lot of Bear Creek members here, too, and they’re excited to see that part of their community is here now.”
